this struggle is why I write...

Two posts ago I wrote this: They struggle to believe in our religion yet they long for our God. As I have said before, this struggle is why I write. This isn’t really a devotional blog, or a cute story ending with a Bible verse kind of blog either. This is about the struggle I have been engaged in for many years and the one I know so many others are entering or are already deep into. There are so many of us moving quickly away from current forms of Christianity that are self centered, finger pointing self righteous, or bogged down in contention. They are the biased forms of this way of Jesus that focus only on personal moral rightness mostly for hell avoidance or personal success instead of seeing the production of the fruits of the Spirit within you as crops to be given away. They are the biased forms that so easily see the ignorance and evil in everyone else and yet fail to see the deadness in their own non-fruit bearing limbs. They are the biased forms of this way of Jesus that get bogged down in asinine theological arguments about things like unwritten rules for worship and the like, all the while failing to show themselves relevant to anyone not already drinking the kool-aid.

So, I write for those who don’t go to “church” anymore or who do and really wonder why. I write for those for whom Christian clichés just don't work anymore. I write for those who take things seriously and desire deeper things yet are willing to admit how stupid they can sound when trying to articulate God. I write for those who grew up in some closed minded churches leaving them spending the last ten years untangling from their messes rather than building on the foundation they laid. I write for those who find value in the Bible, yet remain skeptical of our interpretations especially when they are presented as something more than that. I write for those who don’t need to be reminded that there are people who “take advantage of the system” every time they talk or write about helping the poor.

As I think about it, maybe I just write for myself…

I do have the ability to see each week the locations from where people access the site. So, many of you I know are friends, but some of you stop by week after week and I am not sure why you are here. Part of why I do write this blog is for discussion. So if you have the time, comment or e-mail. Let me know what you are looking for, what you might want to see discussed, or what you may be wrestling with. I’m not looking for compliments or some narcissistic high, but more so to see why readers come by and what you might be interested in getting into from here. Let me know…

I'm with you brother. Papa Sharpe told me years ago, "If you stick to the red letters, you'll be fine." He didn't mean you don't read the rest of the Bible, because it's a really good book! He just meant that if you pay attention to what Jesus said, and how he treated people, and follow that, and try to live that, the rest will work itself out through the help of God. The more I've tried to follow that, the more I know how true it is.

thanks for the comment Ray. On a scale of 1-30 with 30 being great. I give your comment a 27 which I know to you is way better then getting a 30.

The statement at the start of this blog is exactly where I was 33 years ago. I had two steadfast beliefs. One that there was a God and two, that the Bible was his word until proven otherwise. ( it ultimately proved to be more amazing than I bargained for)
So I started checking into Christianity and the system attributed to it. Within about 3 years there was a lot of questions about the legitimacy of the system. the system had too many flaws and did not reflect the character and the wisdom of the "creator of the universe". He does not fit. The conclusion which had to be faced was that God may have nothing to do with the religious systems of today.
I have since found the answers I was looking for and have a belief structure that makes sense. In my opinion you will never "organize God" from within the system as it exists. I could talk on this subject for hours and whether you believe me or not I know you would find it VERY thought provoking. I did write a book outlining what I concluded so if you are interested let me know.

don,

thanks for stopping by. I would be interested to read what you have written. your book deals with what a lot of my posts have been about especially may-september of 2009. organizing God is indeed an oxymoron aimed at exposing our arrogance. so, let me know how to get a copy of what you have written. thanks.

The book is called "The Common Sense God" and it is available at the following website.

I will try and get in touch with you on your website and would be glad to send you a copy. It would be great if you know where I am coming from because we could have some amazing dialogue.
